The story of Iceland's seafaring women was largely lost to mainstream history, eclipsed by a national narrative focused on male heroism and endurance. For centuries, Iceland's maritime history was written almost exclusively by and about men. Yet hidden in the shadows of the past are countless tales of women who worked the seas—as fish processors, fleet owners, rowers, and fishers. Standing shoulder to shoulder with their fathers, brothers, and husbands, they braved the brutal cold, physical exhaustion, and harsh elements, even as their names faded from the history books.
